Pastor Samuel C. Brown
Dr. Samuel C. Brown, Sr. has been our pastor for over 56 years. He was born on January 30, 1939, to Eliza and Clara Brown in Independence, Louisiana. He was married to the late Dr. LaVanner Brown until her untimely passing in November 2004. Dr. Brown is the father of eight children from a previous marriage: Samuel Jr., (Mark Anthony, deceased), Aubrey Montray, Kimberly, Darryl Dwayne, Shlonda Quinette, Philana Rochelle, and Shermekia Latrice. He is also blessed with 34 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from New Orleans Bible College and received his Doctorate in Theology, as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity, from A.P. Clay Christian Theological College in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Brown preached his first sermon on January 10, 1963, and has since dedicated his life to ministry. He has served as the pastor of Great Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church for 56 years and Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church for 54 years. Additionally, he previously served as pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Head of Island, Louisiana, for 17 years. Throughout his ministry, he has organized several churches, including Rising Star Baptist Church, New Day Baptist Church, and Community Baptist Church. Under his leadership, there are 71 elders and 15 pastors, with Greater Mount Pleasant boasting a congregation of over 300 members. Dr. Brown’s life's motto is: "Love all, trust a few, and do wrong to no one." His deep love for humanity drives his commitment to helping people from all walks of life. This dedication is evident in his humanitarian efforts, particularly in supporting young ministers. Regardless of their church affiliation, Pastor Brown ensures that young ministers have the opportunity to preach at both of his churches. His compassion was further demonstrated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, when he became the first pastor on the North Shore to extend a helping hand to displaced citizens arriving in the Hammond area. He opened his church's Youth Ministry Fellowship Hall, providing shelter for over three months. His generosity went beyond housing, as he personally purchased a washer and dryer, supplied telephones, computers, televisions, and other essentials. Additionally, he helped some displaced individuals secure employment. Dr. Brown’s dedication to serving others extends beyond the church. He is an active member of the Circle of Care, an organization that assists individuals in need of financial support for essential medications. "It is my prayer that this website inspires each of you to join us for Sunday service or Bible study and that you are blessed abundantly." — Dr. Samuel C. Brown, Sr.

I initially visited Mt.Vernon with my children's family. After visiting with them regularly, I was deployed to Iraq in 2005. Upon returning in 2006, I decided to revisit on my own merit and because of the teaching by Pastor Brown being so clear and understanding I decided to join as I felt I was being spiritually led by God. Wille; I met Stacey in 2019 and started visiting Mt. Vernon with her. Upon my first visit, I felt like I belonged because the greeters were so kind and friendly. Then, Pastor Brown's teaching so that a child can understand. I decided to join. We wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Through the grace given unto me; I became a member of Greater Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in 2004 because of Dr. Samuel C. Brown who expressed sincere concern for GOD's ministry in my life and his commitment and faithfulness in teaching sound doctrine. The Word of GOD.
